Golub Capital BDC Cuts Dividend 15% as Non-Accruals Climb to 4.1% of Portfolio

GBDC's NAV compression and coverage weakness signal broader strain across the direct-lending stack.

Golub Capital BDC cut its quarterly distribution to $0.34 per share from $0.40, a 15% reduction that marks the first dividend adjustment since the fund's inception in 2010. The move follows sustained net asset value erosion—down 4.8% year-over-year to $14.87 per share—and non-accrual levels that climbed to 4.1% of the portfolio by fair value at the end of Q4 2024. Management cited compressed spreads, higher funding costs, and deteriorating credit quality in the middle-market sponsor universe.

The non-accrual figure is double the 2.0% level recorded twelve months prior. Golub disclosed that three portfolio companies representing $186 million in exposure shifted to non-accrual status during the quarter, primarily in software and healthcare services verticals where EBITDA multiples contracted sharply. Spillover income—the cushion that smooths distributions—fell to $0.02 per share, down from $0.11 a year earlier. Net investment income covered the new dividend at 1.02x, leaving minimal margin for further portfolio stress. The fund's management fee remains unchanged at 1.375% of gross assets.

This is the second meaningful dividend cut in the BDC sector in sixty days. Ares Capital reduced its supplemental distribution in late December, and analysts tracking the space note that at least four additional names—Owl Rock, FS KKR, Blue Owl Technology Finance, and Main Street Capital—are trading below NAV with spillover declining sequentially. The common thread: private equity sponsors stretched deployment into 2021-2022 vintage deals at peak leverage multiples, now facing refinancing walls with SOFR 350 basis points higher than at origination. BDCs sit first-loss on that stack. Credit agreements written with maintenance covenants are flipping to incurrence structures mid-term, reducing early-warning visibility.

Allocators watching credit-adjacent carry strategies should monitor Q1 earnings across the top ten BDCs by AUM, due late April through mid-May. Specific attention to spillover burn rates, weighted average yield compression below 11%, and any uptick in PIK toggle adoption will clarify whether Golub is an outlier or the leading edge. The direct lending market raised $89 billion in 2024, the second-highest year on record, but deployment into new deals slowed 22% sequentially in Q4 as underwriting standards tightened. If non-accrual rates breach 5% sector-wide, secondary market discounts to NAV will widen beyond the current 8-12% range, pressuring closed-end fund structures that rely on at-or-above-NAV equity raises to fund growth.

Golub's stock closed at $13.22, a 11.1% discount to the latest NAV print, following the announcement. The yield reset to 10.3% annualized at the new distribution rate. Three sell-side analysts downgraded coverage to hold, and the April refinancing calendar shows $4.2 billion in Golub-backed credits rolling over terms in the next ninety days.

The takeaway
First Golub dividend cut in fourteen years signals non-accrual pressure is no longer contained to outlier names in direct lending.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
