The deal guarantees 250 megawatts of fuel-cell capacity delivered directly to Nebius data centers under a behind-the-meter structure, removing grid interconnection delays that now routinely stretch 18 to 36 months in U.S. and European markets. Nebius, the European AI infrastructure entity spun from Yandex last year, is racing to bring compute online for frontier model training; Bloom's solid-oxide fuel cells offer 24/7 baseload power at the rack without waiting for utility approvals.
The agreement is structured in phases. Initial deployments begin this year with commercial operations ramping through 2026; Nebius holds expansion rights beyond the guaranteed 250MW if demand warrants. Each Bloom Energy Server generates 200 to 300 kilowatts in a shipping-container footprint, scalable in modules without transmission-line buildout. Natural gas feeds the cells; carbon-capture integration is contractually mentioned but not yet priced or scheduled. Bloom disclosed the revenue will be recognized over the life of the service contract, meaning quarterly top-line contributions start modestly and layer in as capacity comes online. The stock had traded sideways for six months before this print; Wednesday's move took the market capitalization from roughly $3.8 billion to $4.3 billion intraday.
The deal signals accelerating acceptance of on-site generation as the default power architecture for hyperscale AI. Data-center operators building in markets with constrained grid access—Germany, Northern Virginia, parts of Ireland—are signing multi-gigawatt commitments with gas turbine suppliers, nuclear developers, and fuel-cell manufacturers rather than queuing for utility interconnection studies. Bloom has now announced over 1 gigawatt of fuel-cell commitments in the past nine months, including deals with American Electric Power and SK ecoplant. Nebius is positioning as the European counterweight to U.S. cloud giants; its CEO, Arkady Volozh, sold the Yandex parent in 2023 and retained the international infrastructure assets. The Bloom contract gives Nebius firm capacity to anchor lease negotiations with foundation-model labs shopping for sovereignty-compliant compute outside the United States. Grid operators in Frankfurt and Amsterdam have warned that new data-center interconnection requests may face multi-year delays absent local generation; behind-the-meter fuel cells solve that.
Allocators should track Bloom's quarterly megawatt backlog disclosures and cash-conversion timing; the $2.6 billion figure is lifetime value, not upfront payment, and working-capital needs will climb as manufacturing scales. Nebius is private but reportedly targeting a 2026 public listing; any disclosed power costs in that filing will offer pricing benchmarks for long-term fuel-cell contracts. Watch German and Dutch grid-capacity auctions in Q2 2025; interconnection pricing there will set the arbitrage floor for on-site generation economics across the EU. If Bloom installs the first Nebius modules without delays, expect competing fuel-cell and small-modular-reactor announcements from rivals before summer.
