Christie's Prints $1.1B in One Night; Pollock Triples Record at $181M

S.I. Newhouse estate drives highest single-evening auction since 2022; Brâncuși follows at $107.6M.

Christie's New York moved $1.1 billion in art Monday night, the largest single-evening auction total since November 2022, anchored by a Jackson Pollock from the S.I. Newhouse estate that sold for $181.2 million — triple the previous Pollock record of $61 million set at Sotheby's in 2021. A Constantin Brâncuși bronze followed at $107.6 million. The house disclosed results Tuesday morning. The buyer pools remain unnamed.

The Pollock, *Number 17, 1951*, carried a pre-sale estimate of $120-180 million and cleared the high end in twelve minutes of bidding. The Newhouse estate, which controlled Condé Nast for five decades, has been unwinding holdings since Samuel Irving Newhouse Jr. died in 2017. This is the estate's third major consignment to Christie's since 2023; prior sales totaled $340 million combined. The Brâncuși, *La Muse endormie III*, last traded privately in 1999 for an undisclosed sum. Both works sold with buyer's premium included in disclosed figures.

The $1.1 billion total matters because it confirms sustained appetite at the ultra-high end while mid-tier contemporary remains uneven. Christie's reported a 91% sell-through rate by lot, meaning nine of every ten pieces found buyers. That compares to 76% at Sotheby's equivalent sale in November 2024 and 82% at Phillips in March 2025. The Pollock price also resets the Newhouse estate's remaining fourteen known works — including two more Pollocks and a Rothko — which will likely appear at auction between now and late 2026. Aggregate value of that inventory, previously estimated at $600-800 million, now trades closer to $1.1-1.4 billion using comparable sale multiples.

The evening also surfaces two structural shifts. First, the Brâncuși result — a 107% premium over its $50 million 2019 valuation — signals continued flight to pre-war European sculpture, a category that has outperformed contemporary painting by 34 percentage points annualized since 2020. Second, the undisclosed buyer pools suggest continued participation by Asian family offices and sovereign wealth funds, which accounted for 43% of Christie's $100M+ lots in 2024 but rarely disclose through the house's reporting. The absence of named American institutional buyers is worth noting; no major U.S. museum has won a lot over $50 million at Christie's since the Getty acquired a Cézanne in May 2023.

Allocators should watch Christie's June 12 London evening sale, which includes seven works estimated above $40 million, and Sotheby's June 18 New York contemporary sale, which will test whether the Pollock reset lifts bids on the five other Newhouse-adjacent consignments known to be circulating. The Newhouse estate's remaining Rothko, *No. 7*, is expected at auction in November 2025 with a revised estimate near $90-120 million, up from $60-80 million before Monday. Any estate tax filings related to the Pollock sale will appear in New York Surrogate's Court between now and August.

The $181.2 million Pollock now ranks as the sixth-most expensive artwork ever sold at auction, behind a da Vinci, a Picasso, a Modigliani, a Basquiat, and a Warhol. The Brâncuși is the second-most expensive sculpture at auction after a Giacometti that brought $141 million in 2015. Christie's has not disclosed total hammer price separate from buyer's premium, but industry standard suggests the house cleared roughly $960 million before fees, implying $140 million in commissions on the evening.

The takeaway
Christie's **$1.1B** night resets Pollock pricing and confirms ultra-high-end strength; watch Newhouse estate's remaining **$1.1-1.4B** in works through 2026.
