Dan Loeb's Third Point exits $40.87 million gold stake after single quarter

The activist unwinds SPDR Gold position three months in, missing subsequent 7.2% climb through August.

Dan Loeb's Third Point LLC sold its entire SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) position in Q2 2024, a $40.87 million stake disclosed in the prior quarter and liquidated before gold's late-summer rally. The 13F filing shows zero shares at quarter-end, down from roughly 146,000 shares held at March 31.

Third Point entered the gold trade in Q1, adding the ETF as macro volatility ticked higher and Treasury real yields compressed. By June 30, the position was gone. Gold spot traded at $2,331 per ounce on the last day of Q2. It reached $2,499 by mid-August, a 7.2% move Loeb's fund missed. GLD itself added 6.8% in the eight weeks following Third Point's exit. The timing looks disciplined on paper—cut before a seasonal lull—but the follow-through suggests the fund either misjudged the central-bank buying cycle or needed the capital for higher-conviction trades elsewhere in the book.

Third Point runs approximately $5.2 billion in regulatory assets. A $41 million gold position represented less than 0.8% of the book, small enough to be tactical rather than structural. Loeb's firm is known for event-driven equity positions and occasional macro overlays; gold is rarely a core holding. The Q1 entry coincided with geopolitical stress in the Middle East and soft U.S. employment prints. The Q2 exit came as Fed pivot expectations recalibrated and equity volatility collapsed. The fund likely rotated into single-name opportunities with clearer catalysts. That said, sovereign and central-bank gold demand has been relentless. China's PBOC added reserves in ten of the last twelve months. India's RBI accumulated 37 tonnes in H1 2024 alone. Third Point sold into that demand backdrop.

For allocators, the read-through is less about gold's fundamentals and more about how activist funds treat macro hedges. When a position lacks a corporate catalyst or a defined exit, funds tend to cut on calendar quarters, not price targets. Third Point's trade duration—91 days—signals the stake was a volatility buffer, not a thesis. The fund did not disclose a short leg or derivatives overlay in the filing, so the position was likely long-only, making the hold period's brevity more striking. Operators managing tactical overlays should note: even sophisticated funds struggle to time commodity trades when the playbook is defensive rather than directional.

Watch for Third Point's Q3 13F in mid-November. If the fund re-entered gold above $2,400, it confirms the Q2 exit was a liquidity rebalance, not a macro call. If gold stays absent, Loeb's team likely concluded that central-bank flows alone won't justify the carry cost in a portfolio built for operational activism. The SPDR Gold ETF has seen $1.2 billion in net inflows since July 1, institutional money piling in as the Fed's September cut became consensus. Third Point left early.

The takeaway
Third Point's 91-day gold round-trip underscores how activist funds treat macro hedges—calendar exits, not conviction trades.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
