Fidelity Institutional Clients Add $23.92M Bitcoin in Single Week Despite Volatility

Custody data reveals sustained allocation appetite among family offices and pension funds as digital asset infrastructure matures.

Source eciks.org ↗

Fidelity Digital Assets reported institutional client purchases of $23.92 million in Bitcoin during the week ending mid-May, a data point that marks continued allocator interest even as spot prices oscillated between $103,000 and $105,000. The purchases flow through Fidelity's custody infrastructure, which now serves more than 650 institutional clients including registered investment advisors, family offices, and pension funds. The figure represents net inflows, meaning redemptions and sales have been netted out.

The purchase volume sits roughly 18% below the weekly average recorded in Q1 2025, when Fidelity clients added an average $29 million per week. That deceleration reflects broader market conditions: spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net outflows of $142 million in the same period, led by Grayscale and ARK products. Fidelity's institutional custody channel, however, operates separately from its FBTC ETF wrapper. These are direct purchases by allocators who prefer segregated custody and bespoke reporting infrastructure over the liquidity and tax simplicity of an ETF vehicle. The distinction matters because it signals conviction among longer-duration holders who tolerate custody complexity in exchange for operational control.

This flow behavior confirms a pattern visible since late 2024: family offices and endowments treat volatility as entry opportunity rather than exit signal. The $23.92 million figure also suggests Fidelity's institutional client base remains weighted toward allocators with $500 million to $5 billion in AUM, the tier that treats Bitcoin as a 2% to 5% portfolio allocation rather than a trading position. Larger sovereign wealth funds and public pensions, by contrast, continue to rely on ETF wrappers for liquidity and accounting simplicity. The custody route implies longer hold periods and higher tolerance for mark-to-market swings.

Allocators should monitor Fidelity's June institutional flow update, typically released in the first week of the following month, to confirm whether this pace holds or accelerates. Coinbase Institutional and BitGo have not yet published comparable weekly data, but Q1 2025 custody inflows across the three largest providers totaled $1.8 billion, suggesting Fidelity's share remains near 30%. If weekly inflows stabilize above $20 million through June, that would imply annual institutional demand through custody channels alone of roughly $1 billion, separate from ETF flows. The next inflection point is the SEC's pending decision on options contracts for spot Bitcoin ETFs, expected by late June, which could redirect some custody demand back into exchange-traded wrappers.

Fidelity added 47 new institutional clients in Q1 2025, the highest quarterly count since the custody platform launched in 2018. That client growth rate, not the dollar volume, is the forward indicator allocators should track.

The takeaway
Fidelity's $23.92M weekly institutional purchase confirms family offices still treat Bitcoin as a duration asset, not a trade.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
