Galaxy Digital converts $65M mining rescue into $4.5B AI infrastructure position

Galaxy Digital acquired the Helios mining facility for $65 million in a distressed transaction from Argo Blockchain in late 2022. Eighteen months later, that same facility anchors a $4.5 billion AI infrastructure deal, representing a 69x multiple on the original rescue investment. The pivot exploits the structural overlap between bitcoin mining power infrastructure and GPU datacenter requirements.

The Helios facility in West Texas provided 200 megawatts of established grid capacity, industrial cooling systems, and existing utility agreements. Galaxy stripped the ASIC mining rigs and retrofitted the shell for high-density compute. The transaction closed through a joint venture with an unnamed datacenter operator who brought the GPU stack and hyperscaler contracts. Galaxy contributed the real estate, power infrastructure, and $180 million in additional capital for electrical upgrades. The $4.5 billion enterprise valuation implies the joint venture secured forward capacity commitments from at least two Tier 1 cloud providers, likely Microsoft or Google, based on typical datacenter pre-lease multiples.

This matters because it demonstrates a reproducible playbook for stranded energy assets. Distressed bitcoin mining facilities across Texas, Wyoming, and North Dakota hold similar megawatt-scale power contracts negotiated during the 2020-2021 mining boom. Most are now underwater on debt or facing equipment obsolescence. Galaxy's move signals that the arbitrage window between mining-grade power infrastructure and AI datacenter demand remains wide open for allocators willing to deploy bridge capital and operational expertise. The 69x return also recalibrates risk models for distressed crypto infrastructure debt, which has traded at 30-50 cents on the dollar since the FTX collapse.

Operators should watch for follow-on transactions targeting the 12-15 bitcoin mining facilities with 100+ megawatts of capacity currently in Chapter 11 or negotiating creditor standstills. Galaxy's success likely accelerates consolidation bids from traditional infrastructure funds and datacenter REITs who previously avoided crypto-adjacent assets. Timing matters: the hyperscaler capacity crunch for H100 and H200 deployments peaks in Q2 2025, after which supply normalizes and datacenter lease economics compress. Any mining-to-AI conversion must secure hyperscaler pre-leases within the next 90-120 days to capture peak pricing.

The joint venture begins commercial operations in Q1 2025, with 80 megawatts live and the remaining 120 megawatts phased through Q3. Galaxy retained a 35% equity stake and two board seats.

The takeaway
Galaxy turned a distressed mining facility into AI infrastructure at 69x, opening an arbitrage window for stranded energy assets before hyperscaler demand normalizes.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
