Hermès posts 18% organic growth as China drag forces first valuation compression since 2020

Hermès delivered 18% organic revenue growth in the first half while LVMH managed 9% and Kering posted 8%. The Paris leather house added €7.2 billion in sales through June, maintaining its structural advantage in pricing power and client retention. Yet the stock trades down 11% from its April high, the first sustained drawdown since the pandemic recovery began.

The divergence is China. Hermès grew mainland sales 12% in Q2 versus 23% in the prior-year period, a deceleration sharper than anticipated in February guidance. LVMH's Greater China business contracted 14% in the same window, but investors had already priced that scenario. Hermès had been the exception, and exceptions command premium multiples. The house now trades at 47x forward earnings, down from 51x in March and narrowing the gap to LVMH's 43x. Kering sits at 18x, a separate conversation.

The compression reflects two realities. First, Hermès faces year-over-year comparisons that assume continued acceleration in a market where high-net-worth spending is consolidating rather than expanding. Mainland clients who bought three Birkins in 2023 are buying two in 2024, not because wealth declined but because the purchase cycle elongated. Second, American and Japanese buyers absorbed the slack in Q1 but cannot sustain 30%+ growth rates indefinitely. U.S. same-store sales climbed 22% in the half, a figure that mathematically requires either new client acquisition or higher per-transaction values, both of which decelerate as the base grows.

The house maintains 42% operating margins, still the sector benchmark, and leather goods inventory remains below pre-order demand by a factor the company will not quantify. But allocators are marking down 2025 earnings estimates by 6-8%, a subtle reset that assumes China returns to mid-single-digit growth rather than the mid-teens pace of the prior three years. If Beijing's consumption stimulus lands in Q4, those estimates reverse. If it does not, the multiple compresses another 2-3 points to match LVMH's.

Watch for October's Q3 trading update, specifically the language around order books and client acquisition in Asia-Pacific. Hermès does not provide monthly sales figures, so the October statement will be the first clean read on whether September's Shanghai Fashion Week and National Day spending showed stabilization. Also watch the December derivatives roll, where put volume at the €1,900 strike has doubled since July, a signal that long-only funds are hedging quarter-end exposure rather than adding.

The valuation debate is not whether Hermès remains best-in-class. It is whether best-in-class justifies a 29-point premium to LVMH when both face the same macro. The answer depends on whether you believe scarcity compounds or mean-reverts.

The takeaway
Hermès still leads luxury growth, but China deceleration and tougher comps compress the valuation premium to LVMH for the first time since 2020.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
