Hermès posts €16.7B revenue, trades 41.7x earnings as luxury sector premium narrows

The Kelly-bag maker still outpaced LVMH and Kering in 2024, but China deceleration and valuation compression signal a different phase.

Hermès closed 2024 with €16.7 billion in revenue and a share price near €2,240, holding a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 41.7x against LVMH's 23.3x and Kering's 12.7x. The premium persists, but the gap tightened 14 percent year-over-year as allocators began weighing whether scarcity-driven pricing power can offset slowing Chinese demand and tougher year-on-year comparisons.

The Paris-based house grew revenue 11 percent organically in the fourth quarter, down from 14 percent in Q3 and 17 percent in the first half. China, previously the margin engine, posted single-digit growth for the first time since the reopening surge. LVMH's fashion and leather goods division grew 2 percent in Q4; Kering's comparable luxury revenue fell 13 percent. Hermès still leads on velocity, but the rate of outperformance is compressing.

The valuation reassessment centers on three factors. First, Hermès traded at a 79 percent premium to LVMH at the start of 2024; that spread is now 79 percent nominally but represents a smaller absolute dollar wedge as both multiples declined. Second, Chinese consumers—who drove 30 percent of Hermès revenue in 2023—are shifting spend toward domestic brands and experiences, not Western leather goods. Third, production constraints that justified the scarcity premium are easing; the company added 500 artisans in 2024 and opened a sixteenth leather workshop in Riom, increasing Birkin and Kelly output by an estimated 8 percent. Scarcity was the moat. Incremental supply tests the thesis.

Operators should watch three near-term markers. Hermès reports full-year earnings in late March 2025; consensus expects operating margin near 42 percent, flat year-over-year despite price increases averaging 6 percent. That margin plateau would confirm input-cost absorption is complete and incremental revenue now funds artisan expansion, not margin enhancement. Chinese New Year sales data in early February will clarify whether Lunar New Year gifting stabilizes or accelerates the deceleration. Finally, LVMH and Kering report Q1 on April 15 and April 22 respectively; if their China trends inflect positively while Hermès remains muted, the sector narrative shifts from "Hermès immune" to "Hermès lagging the recovery."

The forward contract is this: Hermès at 41.7x assumes permanent scarcity and immunity from cyclical luxury downturns. The fourth-quarter deceleration and China softness suggest the first assumption is loosening and the second was always fiction. Allocators are repricing accordingly, not because Hermès is weak, but because the comparable set is no longer relevant and the next €2 billion in revenue will require different economics than the last.

The takeaway
Hermès still leads luxury velocity but China deceleration and easing scarcity compressed its valuation premium 14 percent as 41.7x forward earnings face structural repricing.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

Built by the craft floor — apparel, media, packaging, and secure print.
This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub. Short-run from twenty-five units, volume to five hundred thousand. Two hundred authorized national brands, seventy thousand SKUs with virtual proofing on every one. Art archived for instant reorders.
