Infineon Technologies acquired C2i Semiconductors in an undisclosed transaction, adding software-defined power architecture capabilities for AI data centers. The Munich-based power semiconductor manufacturer did not disclose terms, but the acquisition positions Infineon to compete directly with Renesas and Texas Instruments in the $4.2 billion programmable power management market that hyperscalers now demand.
C2i specializes in digital power controllers that allow real-time voltage and frequency adjustments across data center racks. The acquisition gives Infineon engineering teams that have shipped products into Meta and Microsoft Azure facilities, according to industry deployment records. Infineon's existing discrete power components—IGBTs, MOSFETs, and gallium nitride switches—now pair with C2i's software layer, creating a grid-to-core power solution that hyperscalers can program dynamically as AI workloads shift.
The timing reflects a structural shift in data center procurement. Nvidia's Blackwell platform consumes 1,200 watts per GPU, up from 700 watts in the prior generation. Rack-level power delivery now requires sub-millisecond response to voltage sag, thermal events, and workload migration. Software-defined power allows operators to partition power budgets in real time rather than over-provisioning static copper bus bars. Infineon's installed base in automotive and industrial markets gives it manufacturing scale; C2i provides the intelligence layer that hyperscalers are writing purchase orders for in 2026 RFPs.
Operators should monitor two developments. First, Infineon's traction with AWS and Google Cloud, which have resisted single-vendor power stacks but are now consolidating supplier lists. Second, the company's planned Q1 2027 launch of a unified power management chipset that combines C2i's digital controllers with Infineon's gallium nitride switches on a single substrate. If that product ships on schedule, it will compress the bill-of-materials cost for a 100-kilowatt AI rack by 18 to 22 percent, based on current component pricing.
The acquisition closes Infineon's two-year gap behind Renesas, which acquired Celeno in 2024 for similar capabilities. The German company now holds patents on dynamic voltage scaling algorithms that align with the Open Compute Project's latest power specifications.
