Infineon Acquires C2i Semiconductors for AI Data Center Power Architecture

German chip maker moves upstream into software-defined power management as hyperscalers redesign rack-level economics.

Infineon Technologies acquired C2i Semiconductors in an undisclosed transaction, adding software-defined power architecture capabilities for AI data centers. The deal gives Infineon control of C2i's grid-to-core power management stack, positioning the company for the next generation of rack-level power delivery as training clusters push past 1.5 megawatts per rack.

C2i developed programmable power controllers that manage distribution from the transformer to the processor socket. The architecture matters because hyperscalers now run heterogeneous compute—GPUs, custom ASICs, CPUs on the same rail—with power draw that swings 40% intra-rack during training runs. Static power delivery wastes capacity. C2i's controllers allocate wattage dynamically, responding to workload telemetry in sub-millisecond intervals. Infineon already supplies the discrete power components; this acquisition gives them the orchestration layer.

The deal reflects a structural shift in data center design. Traditional power distribution treated racks as fixed loads. AI infrastructure inverts that model. A single H100 DGX rack can pull 10.2 kilowatts idle, 70 kilowatts under full training load. Multiply that across a 32,000-GPU cluster and you have a 2.24-gigawatt facility with intra-day demand variance that looks like a small grid. Utilities cannot build that flexibility into upstream distribution. The intelligence has to live at the rack.

Infineon competes with Renesas, ON Semiconductor, and Analog Devices in discrete power components, but none of those firms own the software layer. The C2i acquisition gives Infineon a proprietary advantage in design wins at Microsoft, Meta, and Oracle, all of whom are deploying custom silicon with bespoke power profiles. When a hyperscaler designs a new ASIC, they now design the power controller alongside it. Infineon can bid the full stack. Competitors bid components.

This also positions Infineon against Nvidia's own power management ambitions. Nvidia announced NVLink-C2C interconnect extensions in March that include power arbitration across multi-die packages. If Nvidia controls power delivery at the package level, they own margin Infineon currently captures. The C2i acquisition lets Infineon argue they can manage power across vendors' silicon, not just within one vendor's ecosystem. That matters to hyperscalers running mixed fleets.

Operators should watch Infineon's fiscal Q2 earnings in late April for initial integration commentary and any mention of design win pipeline changes. The company's Data Center & AI segment recorded €1.8 billion revenue in fiscal 2024; commentary on C2i's contribution to that run rate will indicate whether hyperscalers are treating software-defined power as a must-have or a roadmap item. Separately, track utility-scale power purchase agreements in Northern Virginia and Iowa, where Microsoft and Meta are building clusters that will require the grid-to-core management C2i provides.

The acquisition closes Infineon's gap to the hyperscale buyer. They no longer sell components to an OEM who assembles a rack. They sell a power architecture directly to the entity writing the $4 billion capex check for the cluster.

The takeaway
Infineon shifts from discrete power supplier to full-stack provider, capturing margin closer to the hyperscale decision-maker.

AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.

This trade runs on hands, not desks. Imprint manufacturing & Komori Press · Canon high-speed secure-media operations is a craft floor — genuine Six Sigma discipline applied to ink, thread, foil, and registration, where a hundredth of an inch is the difference between a brand that reads serious and one that reads cheap. POPS4 is built by exactly those operators: independent, boots-on-the-ground engineers who carry their own book, read a client in microseconds, and put their name on every run. Beyond our own Virginia Beach floor, we work with a vetted network of craft manufacturers across the US — each meeting the highest excellence in QC standards in the industry, each a specialist in its own discipline — so apparel, hard-goods imprinting, media manufacturing, packaging, and secure printing all go to the bench built for them, coordinated from one accountable hub.
