Jefferies Credit Partners locks $4B European direct lending capacity at first close

The Jefferies Finance arm opens a second front in private credit as spreads tighten and US deal flow slows.

Jefferies Credit Partners closed the first institutional tranche of its inaugural European Direct Lending Fund with approximately $4 billion in committed capacity. The vehicle, launched under the asset management arm of Jefferies Finance LLC, marks the firm's formal entry into European middle-market credit after a decade anchored to North American leveraged buyouts and sponsor relationships.

The fund targets unitranche and first-lien loans to European companies valued between €100 million and €1 billion, with check sizes from €50 million to €300 million. JCP did not disclose anchor investors by name, but the first close included contributions from three European insurance balance sheets and two North American public pension systems. The firm expects a final close by Q1 2027, targeting $6 billion total capacity. European private credit volume reached €48 billion in 2025, up 19% year-over-year, while US deployment grew just 7% over the same period, according to Preqin data through September.

The timing reflects two structural shifts. First, US direct lending spreads compressed 80 basis points in the twelve months through August 2026, pushing SOFR-plus-500 deals into SOFR-plus-420 territory as capital flooded the asset class. European equivalents still price 60-90 basis points wider on comparable credit, largely because fewer US managers have built local origination teams. Second, European regulators left leverage multiples uncapped while the Federal Reserve and OCC began informal guidance in late 2025 discouraging debt-to-EBITDA ratios above 6.5x in sponsored financings. JCP's European book can underwrite 7.0x-7.5x deals without the same supervisory friction, a margin that matters when private equity sponsors need every turn to make IRR hurdles work.

Allocators should track three catalysts over the next six months. JCP will announce its first €200+ million European deal by year-end, likely in business services or healthcare, sectors where Jefferies Finance already holds US relationships that could flip European subsidiaries into the new fund. The firm is hiring four Paris-based originators from Ares and Golub Capital, a signal it intends to compete for French mid-cap mandates where local banks still hold 40% market share. Third, if the European Central Bank cuts rates twice more by March 2027—currently priced at 68% probability—floating-rate credit will reprice lower, compressing the yield advantage that drove US institutions into European allocations in 2024-2025. That would test whether JCP's $4 billion first close was early-cycle positioning or late-cycle capital chasing spread.

Jefferies Finance originated $11.3 billion in US direct loans in 2025, ranking ninth by volume among non-bank lenders. The European fund gives the platform geographic optionality if US private credit returns fall below 10% net, the threshold where several large allocators have said they would rotate capital into European real assets or Asian growth equity.

The takeaway
$4B European first close gives Jefferies Credit Partners wider spreads and leverage optionality as US direct lending compresses.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
