Private Capital Secondaries Hit $121B First Half, Track Toward $250B Year

GP-led continuation funds and LP acceleration strategies doubled the first-half run rate from 2025's $180B full-year total.

The private assets secondary market closed $121 billion in transactions during the first half of 2026, putting the year on track for $250 billion in total volume according to Nigel Dawn, global head of private capital advisory at Lazard. That first-half figure represents 67% annualized growth over 2025's full-year $180 billion total and marks the highest six-month period in the market's history.

GP-led continuation vehicles accounted for $73 billion of the first-half volume, or roughly 60% of total activity. Limited partners used these structures to either extend exposure to high-conviction assets or exit positions entirely, depending on liquidity needs and vintage-year exposure. Traditional LP portfolio sales added $48 billion, reflecting continued pressure on endowments and pension systems to rebalance overweight private equity allocations accumulated during the 2020-2021 vintage years. The average secondary transaction now prices at 88-92% of net asset value, up from 82-86% in the second half of 2024, signaling tighter bid-ask spreads as dedicated secondary buyers compete for deal flow.

The shift matters because it confirms private markets have built durable tertiary liquidity infrastructure independent of public exit markets. When IPO windows narrow or M&A multiples compress, secondaries no longer function as distressed clearinghouses. They operate as planned rotation events inside fund portfolios. Outsourced investment offices told Markets Edge that small endowments and foundations now initiate 20-30% of their private markets exposure through secondary purchases rather than waiting 3-5 years for primary commitments to draw down. That structural change pulls forward deployment timelines and compresses the J-curve, making private strategies accessible to institutions with board-mandated liquidity requirements.

The pricing improvement also matters. When secondaries traded at 75-80% of NAV in 2022-2023, they attracted distressed buyers and turnaround specialists. At 88-92%, they attract strategic rotators—fund managers moving from 2019 vintage exposure into 2024-2025 vintage funds, or family offices swapping venture concentration for buyout diversification. That profile shift increases transaction certainty and reduces due diligence timelines from 16-20 weeks to 10-12 weeks, according to placement agents active in the market.

Allocators should watch whether continuation fund volumes hold above $35 billion per quarter through year-end. If GP-led activity stays elevated, it confirms that fund managers view selective asset retention as a permanent capital strategy rather than a 2021-2022 emergency response. The other data point: whether dedicated secondary funds raise more than $80 billion in 2026 vintage commitments. Coller Capital, Lexington Partners, and Ardian are all in market with funds sized $15-20 billion each. If those close at target, it validates that LPs are allocating to secondaries as a distinct asset class rather than an opportunistic tilt.

Lazard will release full-year secondary volume data in January 2027, but the market is already pricing 2027 activity at $275-300 billion based on forward pipeline visibility. That assumes no recession and stable private asset valuations, which makes it a forecast rather than a floor.

The takeaway
Secondaries priced $121B in H1 2026, tracking toward $250B full-year as GP-led continuation funds and LP rotation drive structural liquidity.

Your next customer won't visit your website. Their AI will.
AI assistants have quietly taken over the first step of buying — they answer from catalogs they can read and shortlist whoever can actually ship. Two questions now decide whether you exist to that buyer: can a machine read your catalog, and can you fulfill the order. Most brands fail one or both and never find out why the orders went elsewhere. The winners of this shift aren't the loudest. They're the most readable. Build for the machine that's about to do the shopping.
